So today I thought I would get a little personal in my blog post and share with you all why I travel. I know what some of you are thinking: “Obviously you travel to see new places.” Well that’s partly the reason but there are so many other things about travelling that entice me.
I travel to escape. Not to escape my life, not to escape any problems or anyone, but to escape into another world. Even travelling an hour outside of home gives me new perspective on the world and shows the different ways people live. At home, I live in your own world, in my own little bubble. But when I step away from home, I step into someone else’s world.
I travel to experience. Travelling gives me the opportunity to experience the way people live in other cultures. I learn their mannerisms and their customs. I experience different ways of living. For example, when I went over to Italy, every thing is so laid back. No one is on time, they take everything at their own pace. Back home, we want to do things the fastest way possible, which causes out to miss out on certain simplicities of life. Something as important as eating a meal is rushed because we either have to be somewhere or we want to be doing something else. In Italy, eating a meal is savoured, it is prolonged in order to experience the meal itself and to spend as much time as possible with the company you are with.
I travel to clear my mind. Something as simple as taking a drive outside of the city helps me gain a new perspective on situations. Staring out an an ocean makes me humble and forces me to realize how small my problems actually are. We are a speck amongst other specks. There is something extremely calming about staring out at the ocean; it forces you to be in the present and listen to the sounds around you. It clears my mind.
I travel to live. At home, I am so comfortable in my routine; working 9-5 and then spending my free time sleeping, doing homework, or catching up with friends. I go to the same places and see the same people and do the same things day after day after day. Travelling breaks up the mundane day-to-day activities. For a few days, I can step out of my life as it is and into another. I do things I wouldn’t normally do and eat things I wouldn’t normally eat. I find happiness in the small things like the way a city smells and the way the sky looks. I look at your best friend or my boyfriend and realize just how much I love them because I have gained this new perspective on your life. I realize how grateful I truly am to have the ability to experience new cultures and to be able to afford to see exotic places. Travelling makes me realize that I am lucky to be breathing and healthy and happy.
