This Music Monday is all about girl group G.R.L. Some of you may be asking, who is this G.R.L. and where have I heard them before? Well if you recall the song Wild Wild Love by Pitbull that came out about a year ago, they’re the girls who sing the hook and chorus of the song. Let’s refresh your memory below.
Right?! Ok now that we’re all caught up, G.R.L. is an energetic, American-British-Canadian, and super-fun group of ladies from many different background. “Wow they kind of remind me of the Pussycat Dolls and Girlicious”, well that my friends is because G.R.L. was founded by the one and only Robin Antin who also founded the previous girl groups. The group consists of members Lauren Bennett, Emmalyn Estrada, Simone Battle, Natasha Slayton and Paula van Oppen. Unfortunately, at the end of last year, Simone Battle passed away, her death being ruled a suicide.
The reason I wanted to talk about this group today is because their song Ugly Heart has just made its way back into my playlists on iTunes and I forgot how catchy that song is! Watch the music video below!
I dare you not to listen to that song on repeat dancing around in your room.
Some of you may be saying “yeah but those girl groups are all about looks and auto-tune”. I say boo to all you nay-sayers because by watching an acoustic performance below from PerezTV, you can CLEARLY tell that these girls have major talent individually and as a whole.
After Simone’s passing, the rest of the group members released the song Lighthouse (which is also their new single) in memory of her. The song is about supporting those around you and being there for them when they need you. The video shows a lot of behind the scenes footage of the group with Simone. G.R.L. is a proud partner of changedirections.org, a non-profit organization for mental health. Check it out below.
The four girls will be opening up for The Australian leg of Meghan Trainor’s That Bass tour.
