On the Labour Day long-weekend me and my sister travelled to Ottawa to learn a little more about our country and also to have fun! Well when conjuring up some things to do in a simple Google search, I came across a place that most definitely caught my eye – Escape Manor. Escape Manor is essentially a situation-based game where you and your teammates are “locked” in a room for 45 minutes and have to find and figure out multiple clues in order to get out. I put quotations around locked because you aren’t in fact locked in there; you have the option of leaving to go to the bathroom or any other reason. However, the only way to successfully “escape” the game is to use the key found in the room through a series of clues and use that to unlock the door. You have the opportunity to ask for help once via walkie-talkie; any other requests for help beyond the first time results in a failure to escape. After the 45 minutes is up, this also results in a failure to escape.
The rooms at Escape Manor offer situations based on an asylum, a jail cell, a wine cellar, and a cult. Each room has a different degree of difficulty and success rate. We chose to do the asylum, which had an escape rate of 22%, the highest escape rate at Escape Manor. I can’t go into detail about what went on in the room because then that would ruin the fun for everyone, but we did manage to escape with just over 6 minutes left on the clock! The adrenaline rush you get the whole time you’re in there is insane – you just want to win, win, win! The maximum people you can have on your team is 6 people, so me and my sister were paired with 4 other individuals. I must say, the more people you have, the better; both my sister and I agreed if it was just us two, we probably wouldn’t have made it out. It is definitely a team-based game!
Escape Manor is located on the third floor and is accessible by both elevator and stairs. The lobby area is gothic-themed with old chess sets and decor; creating a fantastic ambiance to set you up for the game. The check-in process was easy and they even now have a licensed bar! So if you’re looking to pre-game a little before you try and make an escape, you can do so right there! They also offer a couple snack options.
I would 100% recommend Escape Manor to anyone and everyone. If you are going to be in the Ottawa area, it is a must. This was definitely the highlight of our entire trip! For more information please check them out on their website or Facebook Page!
