Wow I haven’t done a real blog post in a couple weeks and man do I feel weird about it. It was so hard not being able to do posts while I was in Italy!
So you might be thinking, if she went to Italy, why is this blog post about Brussels? Well my friends, let me tell you everything from the beginning.
Me and my friends were interested in booking the most fulfilling vacation possible for the least amount of money. So, we ended up booking our flight home from Rome before we even booked our flight to Milan! When we did book our flight to Milan, our cheapest flight option included a 7 and a half hour stop-over in Brussels, Belgium. We were at first a little distraught about such a long stop-over but we figured we could take the opportunity to leave the airport and tour a city that we hadn’t originally planned on seeing. Well… that 7 and a half hour stop-over turned into a 12 and a half hour stop-over.
We boarded our flight on May 23rd from Toronto to Brussels via Jet Airways. We didn’t know what to expect from Jet Airways as no one I knew had ever flew with them. They are an airline based in India that specialize in flights from Toronto to Brussels. I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised. The economy seats were comfortable and there was more legroom than we expected! We were also given a pillow and blanket free of charge, which aided to the smooth, turbulence-free ride we experienced.
We arrived in Brussels just before 8am and man were we exhausted. We proceeded through customs and left the airport to see some sights, taking the train. We obviously first stopped at a Belgium waffle stand to taste the waffles that are rivaled by none. Mine was covered in Nutella and my friends got a variety that included Nutella, bananas, and strawberries. They were DELISH and you need to eat one if you ever find yourself in Belgium.
Next, we made our way to the famous Mannekin Pis statue which, if you don’t know, is a statue of a little boy peeing – weird right? Next, we didn’t really have any other sites on our list aside from the Atonium and Mini Europe which were both too far to venture to. We walked around the city taking in the beautiful buildings and graffiti. We eventually stopped at a pub and had some authentic Belgium beer (Stella of course). By this point we were beyond tired and we were only 3 and a half hours into our 12 and a half hour layover.
After the pub, we walked around some more but we all really just wanted to sleep. After 4 hours of walking around, we were calling it quits. We made our way back to the airport and all proceeded to fall asleep on some deceivingly uncomfortable chairs. After our extremely long nap, we boarded our flight to Milan!
